Anime Films (USA Theatrical Release)

[Image of City Hunter] Numerous anime films have been shown in American theaters. However, finding such films on American screens is extremely hit-and-miss at best. The largest factor determining the availability of theatrical-release anime is location: Larger cities are more likely to have one or more venues screening anime in theaters than elsewhere. For example, Perfect Blue was shown theatrically in only thirty cities in the United States and Canada, and released on videotape and DVD in the United States while it was still being screened on its limited theatrical circuit. Some popular anime films shown in American theaters:

  • Perfect Blue (Late Summer 1999-Spring 2000)
  • Princess Mononoke (Winter 1999)
  • Pok»mon: The First Movie (Fall 1999)
  • X: The Movie (March 2000)
  • Digimon: The First Movie (Fall 2000)

Note that all of these films have been released on American screens since November 1997, when Anastasia initiated the wave of non-Disney animations which came to theaters across the United States.
